Today I'm going to introduce MoveNote, a very simple tool for students to practice speaking. Regarding CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication), MoveNote provides a platform for asynchronous, speaking communication. Due to these two features, students can have opportunities to practice speaking in a more relaxing way without the pressure of real-time communication.
MoveNote is one of the most straightforward tools I've used. Maybe due to its simplicity, the tutorial video is quite short. :P
Unlike other tools with dazzling functions, you can merely put PDF, JPG, PNG, and PPT. But just because of its simplicity, I believe that you can get started on it quickly. Besides, I highly recommend that you sign in with your Google account as you can send your products through Gmail in a second. After signing in, you can use it for free!
When it comes to using MoveNote to practice speaking, students can do lots of activities. For instance, individual students can read articles, tell stories, present reports, describing pictures, etc. They can have enough time and opportunities to prepare themselves well for recording. Also, students may feel lower anxiety since they are not under the pressure of getting feedback immediately or maintaining ongoing conversations with someone else.
Seeking more interactions for more advanced learners, you may group your students to do some presentation tasks with peers. For example, they can demonstrate reports collaboratively, make programs where interviews take place, debate certain topics in the real-life world and so on. Students can enjoy interactions with their partners when recording, and the feedback/comment from the audience.
The audience's replies can be in the forms of video and text. |

So, you may notice that products can be spread by embedding and URL, which are easy to do. Besides, you can revisit your products in "archive" and manage them with some clicks.
As this tool is pretty straightforward and user-friendly, I didn't encounter any problem when doing the recording task in class. During recording, you can have some pauses and then resume recording, which is convenient if the recording is interrupted by unavoidable "risks" such as mommy entering the student's room. Hahaha After recording, the product is uploaded automatically. Therefore, students needn't worry about getting lost at this phase, where, according to my colleagues, Screencast-o-matic users may face a sudden shut-down of the window when the recording is done, and they have to find out the file and upload it on their own.
Although MoveNote can't record the whole screen, it is functional enough for students to do some interesting speaking practices. Also, teachers can use it to make some easy online course videos for students to learn at home. Tell me what you think.
Hey James - I've actually just used this tool to make an introductory video of myself, to send to prospective employers and agents in China. I just hope they'll be able to access it in the mainland! As for language learning, I think it's perfect for lower level or quiet students as they'll be able to pause, or redo their presentations easily. Teacher's can then send their feedback in the form of a movenote, which would be quite cool to receive as a beginning student of English. Gary
回覆刪除Hi Gary,
刪除I agree that it is a very good tool for beginning learners, for they do need more time and practice to prepare themselves for speaking. I think it great to leave messages to learners via recording as students can practice listening and speaking at the same time. Good luck for your job seeking!:D
